- How does art procurement work at The Blue Chip Room?
- Every procurement mandate begins with a private consultation to define the artist, period, budget, and purpose of the acquisition. We then approach our network of collectors, estates, and dealers, verify provenance and condition, benchmark the price against auction and private-sale records, and negotiate and close on your behalf. You only commit once the work, documentation, and terms are fully vetted.
- What commissions or advisory fees do you charge?
- Our fees are structured per engagement and agreed in writing before any work begins. Acquisitions and private placements are typically charged as a fixed percentage commission on the final transaction value; advisory and collection-management mandates can be arranged on a retainer or project basis. There are no hidden costs — any third-party fees such as shipping, insurance, or conservation are quoted separately and transparently.
- Can you source off-market artworks that are not publicly for sale?
- Yes — discreet off-market sourcing is core to what we do. Many blue chip works never reach auction or public listings; they change hands privately. Through long-standing relationships with collectors, estates, and the trade, we can quietly approach owners on your behalf, gauge willingness to sell, and structure a confidential transaction that protects both parties.
- How is confidentiality handled during a transaction?
- Discretion is non-negotiable. We never disclose a client's identity, collection, or intentions without written consent. Where required, we transact under non-disclosure agreements and can act as an unnamed principal so neither buyer nor seller is revealed to the other side until terms are agreed.
- How long does it take to source a specific artwork?
- It depends on rarity and market depth. Works by actively traded South African masters can often be located within weeks; tightly held or museum-grade pieces may take several months of quiet enquiry. We set realistic timelines at the outset and keep you informed at every stage.
- Do you advise sellers as well as buyers?
- Yes. For divestment we prepare the work — provenance, condition, valuation — and place it privately with qualified buyers, or advise on auction strategy when the public market offers the stronger result. Our role is to protect value and discretion on either side of the transaction.
